Well, it's one of those weeks when it pays off to be a rock critic!

Among the week's new releases are reissues of The Beatles' so-called "red" and "blue" albums--their famous pair of 2-CD greatest hits collections--Bob Dylan's Bob Dylan: The Original Mono Recordings, his first eight albums re-released in glorious mono, and The Complete Elvis Presley Masters, a 30-CD set containing all 711 of his master recordings!

After considerable listening, here's the verdict:

Kings Of Leon: Come Around Sundown (RCA) ?Some people call them the greatest American rock ‘n' roll band going, others call them potential dunderheads who have never before come so close to repeating themselves at every turn, and still others--particularly residents of Leon--call them "your majesty"! Others call them at 615-555-LEON, order their carpets cleaned, and with a gnawing pain in the pit of their stomachs, watch Oprah and try to focus on the better days that must surely be ahead! But one thing's for sure--this new album is their fifth, and in the years to come, it will be regarded as the one that came between their fourth and sixth!

Kings Of Leon - Radioactive

Sugarland: The Incredible Machine (Mercury Nashville) ?Admittedly it's a bold stance for one of the biggest country bands in the land to devote an entire album to the invention of the eggbeater, but still--country music can be enjoyed by both men and housewives! And if perky singer Jennifer Nettles can sound as convincing as she does here singing songs such as the title track, "Stuck Like Glue," "Every Girl Like Me," and "Find The Beat Again," then God bless her! The big question, of course, is that if this album takes off like wildfire can we expect a solo album by Sugarland dude Kristian Bush extolling the merits of Zoysia grass? Plus, is there life after death? I'm only asking!

Sugarland - Stuck Like Glue

Shakira: Sale El Sol (Epic) ?For her ninth album, international superstar Shakira returns with a zesty and danceable international mix, heavy on the Latin side, and thankfully less focused on cracking any particular market! Featured is her World Cup super track "Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)," guest appearances by reggaeton artist El Cata and the always charming Pitbull, an interesting cast of musicians, and a great picture of her apparently lying on her back and keeping her eyes open for any colored bracelets walking by! Whatever keeps her happy, that's what I say!

Shakira - Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)

Elton John/Leon Russell: The Union (Decca)? With its title and striking cover photo suggesting a musical interpretation of the American Civil War, or a gas station, or a teamsters' strike, or a Duran Duran tribute, The Union may offer loads of great interpretations! But it's difficult to argue with the pairing of true musical icons Elton and Leon--with the former effusively praising the latter as a personal inspiration nearly everywhere--or the top-notch production here of the ubiquitous T Bone Burnett, who has allowed the natural talents of these much-admired artists to shine through in ways heretofore unimaginable! The Ferrante & Teicher of the 21st century? It just may be!

Elton John/Leon Russell - If It Wasn't For Bad

Rod Stewart: Fly Me To The Moon: The Great American Songbook, Volume V (J Records)? While we're discussing ‘70s icons still flying high, let's not forget Mr. Rod Stewart, whose latest album--his fifth in a series of bestsellers devoted to classic songs of the 20th century--is smooth, kind of slick, but still kind of nice! Among the tunes heard here: "Beyond The Sea," "I Get A Kick Out Of You," "Moon River," "That Old Black Magic," and a bunch of other things your mother or grandmother probably liked dancing around to! Not to share too much, but my own mother asked me to get her this for Christmas! Glad she's finally off that Cramps kick!

Miley Cyrus: Hannah Montana Forever (Walt Disney)? The soundtrack to the final season of Disney's Hannah Montana series is here, and like the show itself, it's a surefire winner! With a crew of guests including Sheryl Crow, Iyaz and her pop, Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley's in top form throughout--particularly in those tracks from the show's final episode, when an onstage Hannah points to a faraway planet she apparently believes worships her because "they can pick up our TV signals"--and then announces to her stunned audience that she plans to depart Earth and move there! Her poignant version of "Que Sera," delivered to the masses moments before she finally enters her spacecraft, may well have been television at its finest--and it's not bad here, either!

Ravi Shankar & George Harrison: Collaborations (Dark Horse/Rhino) ?A welcome repackaging of the collaborative works of these two musical giants, these are "collaborations" in the sense that Beatle Harrison produced the music here--which is all Shankar's--both when the master sitarist was signed to his Dark Horse label (producing Shankar Family & Friends [1974] and The Ravi Shankar Music Festival From India [1976]) as well as his Chants Of India set, released on Angel in 1997. Additionally including a DVD featuring a 1974 performance at the Royal Albert Hall, the package is a lovingly crafted collection additionally commemorating the long-lived Shankar's 90th birthday. Inspirational, lovely stuff.

Liz Phair: Funstyle (Rocket Science)? Oftentimes I rely on product descriptions to inspire me when I write this much-loved blog--frankly, I often have nothing to say!--so I'm thankful when I can read the following and follow its intrinsic, linguistic beauty: "The ever prolific Liz Phair is back with her first release, Funstyle, in 5 years." So, like, let's think this through! Can it be that she is 995 years old, and thus by releasing an album every five years she might accurately be called prolific? Do prolific fruit flies release albums every 10 minutes or so? Heck, it works for the Jonas Brothers! This great record contains "Bollywood," the track which is so sublimely ridiculous it apparently has alienated longtime Phair fans, most of whom have invested a considerable portion of their past raving about how great Exile In Guyville supposedly was and now feel deeply ashamed! Me? I think it's all great!

Tammi Terrell: Come On And See Me: The Complete Solo Collection (Hip-O Select)? Some?superb reissuing at work here via Hip-O--who've assembled just about all the tracks ever recorded by Motown star Terrell, who died in 1970, just 24 years old. Included are works for other labels such as Scepter/Wand and Checker/Chess--not just the Motown stuff--and 10 previously unreleased works from the vaults. Given Motown's distinguished history, and its sometimes slipshod reissue programs over the years, it's great to see this level of attention devoted to fine detail on their catalog artists. Recommended.

Tammi Terrell - This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)

The Beatles: The Beatles/1962-1966, The Beatles/1967-1970 (Apple)? Both sets here have been newly remastered by the same team who did the recent Beatle reissues--they sound great!--each feature fine liner notes by Bill Flanagan, and, as always, if you can only afford to own two Beatles albums, these two would be the way to go. Ever think about getting a job?

Every once in a while I wonder if I'm being an alarmist about the state of the music industry!

Pundits left and right moan about "golden circle" tickets to concerts by artists whose careers peaked decades ago costing 500 bucks a shot! Take a date, throw in a babysitter, dinner and parking, and you're talking more than a grand to see some clownheads whose sell-through date expired sometime in the ‘90s!

Surely things can't be that bad, you wisely reason!

"Wanna hear something funny," asked a friend of mine this afternoon on IM!

"Shipping on the Kate Nash tix from her site is $11.95"

"We just got a new toilet from Kohler that came in a huge box"

"Shipping on that was $7.95"

Toilet humor: It's never been more relevant!

Heart: Red Velvet Car (Legacy Recordings)? Believe it or not, the Wilson sisters--Ann and Nancy--are still at it, rocking, rolling, and seeing past hits such as "Barracuda" being employed by careerist Alaskans with a hankerin' for Lady Liberty! Still relevant after all these years? Well, we know about females and red cars, don't we? And we know about females and their insatiable urge for red velvet cupcakes, don't we? Put ‘em both together, add some groovy acoustic guitar, some high-pitched female yelping, and a distinguished legacy that simply has never gone away, and there you have it:?One of the best-selling cookbooks in history! Apparently a record is involved as well!

There You Go - Heart?

Disturbed: Asylum (Reprise)? Perhaps one of this year's most fascinating new albums is the latest from hard-rockers Disturbed, in which the gruff-but-sincere rockin' dudes finally spell out precisely what it is that disturbs them so! Apparently, in sequence, it's "man's inhumanity to man," "little kitties at pet stores," "war and intolerance," and "those plastic six-pack rings that people throw into the ocean and choke dolphins?and stuff"! Who would have suspected such a fierce exterior houses a combo with a heart of?gold? Some say the new CD contains actual music, but really--can that actually be the point here?

Remnants - Disturbed?

Goo Goo Dolls: Something For The Rest Of Us (Warner Bros.)? There's much more to be said about the Goo Goo Dolls aside from the fact that their name is an anagram for Dog Logo Solo! For starters, they're still here, after all these years, mixing up the hard rock we all love with those soothing melodic hooks guaranteed to set the hearts of the ladies in the audience a-flutterin'! Additionally, while it may be well known the band has its own recording studio in Buffalo, few realize the latter is a biological rather than geographic term! And it's tight in there! Finally, in these trying times, when political despots take all the food and leave nothing for the starving masses, it's nice to know that there's always the option of boiling your shoes and eating the leather for its pure protein value! Something for the rest of us? If you don't face your problems head-on, you'll never conquer them! A great record!

Sweetest Lie - Goo Goo Dolls?

10 Years: Feeding The Wolves (Universal Republic) It's hard to disagree with the innate hard-rocking nature of 10 Years, who have thrown all caution and need-for-hipness to the wind and simply rock out here! Produced by Howard Benson, who has a reputation for making all this loud stuff palatable, Feeding The Wolves is state-of-the-art, pure rockin' 2010-style, with the band wisely displaying a calculated eye toward the long and distinguished career awaiting them! Their plan? To eventually recruit Brit guitarist Alvin Lee and "confuse the heck out of future discographers and other morons who need to go out and get a life!" At least that's what this guy Larry told me at the 7/11 this afternoon! I can't get enough of their love!

Shoot It Out - 10 Years?

Papa Roach: Time For Annihilation...On The Road And On The Record (Eleven Seven Music)? "Papa Roach wage war every time they pick up their instruments," notes their album bio proudly! "It's a war for musical integrity. It's a war for their fans. It's a war for rock 'n' roll." Sadly, on the basis of this album, it must also be a war to find fans who are hard of hearing but really get into cool logos! With enough alcohol in your system, you'd be forgiven for thinking this is the latest Manowar album--and for forgetting that after spending years thinking this band's lead singer looked like one of the Baldwin brothers, your own mother told you her dad looked "just like Alec Baldwin. It's in the eyes"! Papa Roach may be the best band ever, but let's not forget--the capital of Florida may be Albany!

Burn - Papa Roach?

Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses: Junky Star (Lost Highway)? After winning an Oscar and potentially stepping into a lifestyle of fame and fortune, why not call your band the Dead Horses and feature the word "junky" in your next album's title? It worked for Barbra Streisand! Produced by T Bone Burnett, Bingham's third album is a good one--filled with thoughtful songs, rockin' and ramblin', and a sense that his musical direction lies not in country music, not in rock, but in that artful area in between! By purchasing this album, you will be directly responsible for Bingham not feeling the need to repeat his "Oscar success" after struggling for the next five years, for putting actual food in his mouth, and for keeping a few janitors at his record company working for a few more days! Could you possibly be selfish enough not to?

Junky Star - Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses

Jenny And Johnny: I'm Having Fun Now (Warner Bros.)? How fascinating that this new informal combo by Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis and solo artist Johnathan Rice has made a record that's noticeably more enjoyable than any of their own past work--almost as if a cruel and tempestuous God wanted to point out the folly of their pursuing their own separate artistic ambitions when heck, he could make anything happen! Evoking those early days when fun-loving guy ‘n' gal combos made melodic, pop-filled records that aimed for pure joy rather than deep emotional significance, I'm Having Fun Now is precisely the record you need screaming out of your dashboard when a policeman stops you for going 80 in a 40 mph zone and you realize his life is nothing compared to yours! Later, however, aging will ensue!

Scissor Runner - Jenny And Johnny?

Leonard Cohen: Bird On A Wire DVD (Tony Palmer/MVD)? After spending about 20 years looking for this movie and repeatedly coming up with some dorky Mel Gibson/Goldie Hawn vehicle, I'm delighted to report that that highly-regarded 1972 Leonard Cohen documentary is finally commercially available and is everything it's supposed to be: fabulous, mainly.?Documenting one of our most interesting artists during the period of his creative zenith, the film, directed by Tony Palmer, follows Cohen touring in Europe and features a wealth of fascinating music moments as well?as much of Cohen's finest material. The packaging here is generous to a fault--and the intimate look behind the scenes, so long ago, is priceless. Amazing stuff!

Klaxons: Surfing The Void (Polydor UK) ?Already a favorite purely for its cover art--and admittedly Billy Joel does look a little long in the tooth--this new album by Britain's highly skilled, highly memorable Klaxons has been long in coming and very much worth waiting for! Produced in Los Angeles by Ross Robinson--not exactly who you might think they'd turn to--the album represents a big step up from the dance/rock/electro/polka fusion of the band's debut and is catchy, bouncy, and prone to soiling your litter box! In Georgia, they'd call these guys fruitcakes!

Atom Smash: Love Is In The Missile (Jive) ?In the early ‘70s, a great band called Pacific Gas & Electric put out an album featuring a picture of a beautiful girl surrounded by a hot dog, cucumber and banana! This is like that, but it's newer!

Apologies for my lack of a post last week--I was literally out of the country, in Germany at the Reeperbahn Festival, which you can read about here if you'd like, thus had no relevant opinions whatsoever about music!

Rest assured, however, that if I were here, I'd probably have written fascinating analyses of the latest albums by Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Eat World, Seal, Phil Collins, Kenny Chesney, the Doobie Brothers, the fabulous reissue of David Bowie's Station To Station, Mark Ronson and the Gin Blossoms! And I'd be willing to bet that each account would be overly hyperbolic, deliberately goofy, include a few moronic puns, and also include a well-intentioned piece of misinformation, placed there purely to elicit a protest from unwitting readers just for kicks!

There might also have been excessive punctuation!

Sadly, though, no such blog exists--but suffice to say that if it did, it would likely be acclaimed throughout the world, garner several awards for its very craft, offer ten dollars to each individual reader, and look precisely like this one, but with different pictures!

And as always, appearances are everything!

John Lennon: Signature Box (Capitol)? It's always great fun reviewing the collected works of a major artist; one of my major regrets as a music critic was never getting around to reviewing the Beatles' mono box and calling it "disappointing"! But this great big new 11-CD box, gathering John Lennon's 1971-84 solo albums, can truly be assessed for its worth as a music collection, as it contains all of Lennon's major post-Beatle works, great and small, and while some of it is fabulous, some of it is not! Which is OK! As an object, it also offers up a 2-CD set of rarities, a special book containing essays from the family surprisingly plugging late ‘60s art-rock band Yes, and is indeed the very epitome of early 21st century tasteful packaging! Many of the songs are quite good as well! Should you buy it if you already have most of these albums? Sure, go ahead!

Toby Keith: Bullets In The Gun (Show Dog/Universal) ?I like Toby Keith, mostly because there is a certain directness to his songs that I know is placed there because it resonates with his loving audience--which means that, say, a song like "Get Out Of My Car"--really, an enviable song title--is likely aimed at that segment of America which has either uttered those words or would at one point have liked to! And the big questions, like who exactly is the song addressed to--a wife, a lover, a boyfriend, a cheap hussy, a bothersome wasp or spider, a parking ticket?--don't really matter in the scheme of things, especially since the album title's simple acceptance of a gun's very existence already sends out a subtle message to the buying audience! And I sure like that cover!

KT Tunstall: Tiger Suit (Virgin)? I'm a big fan of KT Tunstall, because she is a completely self-contained music generating music unit, is cute as a button, writes surprisingly catchy songs, and is generally--and I don't mean this literally--sharp as a tack! This new album, recorded in Berlin's classy Hansa Studios, is a tad less "organic" than is her norm thanks to noticeable contributions by a former Sneaker Pimp, but from where I stand, that's good, not bad! Wait a minute, let me move over a few feet. No, it's still good, even from here! Anyone who can put together a clever song with a few good hooks is OK in my book, and KT certainly can! And if her infamous legal turmoils with a certain baseball team have left an odd mark coloring her aesthetic stance, so be it!

David Archuleta: The Other Side Of Down (19 Recordings)? I don't know about you, but I'm a little tired of all this hubbub about American Idol participants and their ultimate worth as music artists! It's easy to call them meaningless, fame-craving empty vessels who will do absolutely anything they can in order to achieve a record deal--but is it really accurate? Can't some of them actually make a record that means anything to them personally? Well, in the case of young David Archuleta, who prior to his Idol stint spent several years at a local Sit ‘N Sleep shop spelling out the difference between Sealy, Simmons and Serta mattresses to potential customers, the answer is clearly Yes I Can! Unfortunately, a wealth of knowledge about quality pillows and comforters may not translate to the majority of today's record buyers, but you know what? Not everyone needs a new album, but everyone needs a brand new bed!

Joe Satriani: Black Swans And Wormhole Wizards (Epic)? There has been an unfortunate tendency among music critics, probably since the dawn of punk rock, to discount those musicians out there who are simply too technically adept as playing mind-numbing, hollow music that ultimately doesn't mean much compared to, I don't know, a simple "1-2-3-4" song intro by the Ramones! How dopey! Both can be equally meaningless! But let's face facts--Satriani has a great haircut, is Italian, plays a sexy red guitar, and isn't above making appearances on YouTube with Coldplay! Plus his music sounds better than ever! Frankly, I don't know what the heck most of these songs are about--the words are sort of inaudible--but that only makes them more timeless than ever! I'm completely digging this thing!

Faith Evans: Something About Faith (Entertainment One)? The first album in five years from Grammy-winning R&B songstress is a good one: substantial music, varied arrangements, guest appearances by Snoop Dogg and Keyshia Cole, and cover art straight out of the next National Velvet remake! I can't wait to hear it! Unfortunately, Something About Faith is a press release! Apparently the album itself will be called Faith's New Record! Literalism: the bane of our very existence!

Soundgarden: Telephantasm (A&M)? Sometimes bands who were once a great big deal sound kind of iffy years after the fact, but this is not the case with Soundgarden, whose collection here--a deluxe set featuring 2 CDs and a DVD--is a welcome reminder that these former rockin' dudes were once dudes who rocked! What I liked best about ‘em was they whether they were deliberately being ironic or not with their dopey HM posing--it was the late ‘80s/early ‘90s back then, don't forget--it really doesn't make much of difference, sonically speaking! And excess--which this band really excelled at--sounds great no matter what year you're hearing it! I recommend not only buying but playing it!

Bring Me The Horizon: There Is a Hell Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven Lets Keep It a Secret (Epitath)? Some say this British band is "defining the sound of modern metal as we know it"! Others say the years they spent as parking lot attendants and their extraordinary hatred of Plymouths has colored their music and lifestyle on profound levels! Still others suggest that were they to hire David Clayton-Thomas as their new lead singer and do nothing but perform "Spinning Wheel" repeatedly until they were booed offstage, that would be fascinating to watch! All I know is the guy on the album cover has great abs!

Fran Healy: Wreckorder (Ryko)? The first solo album from the singer and major writer from Travis is a good one--actually sort of better than that band's last few, if you ask me--because of the variety of songs, the depth of the writing, the guest appearances by Neko Case and Paul McCartney (on bass), and the fact that it's not bad to listen to while you're stuck on the 405 worrying about whether you're going to get to work on time! Of course, that may just be me! I figure if you're a teenaged guy named Fran, you'll probably spend a lot of time alone in your bedroom learning how to write good songs!

Bruno Mars: Doo-Wops & Hooligans (Elektra) Famous for writing hits galore for other people, Bruno Mars has just released his very first album! Its cover? Yellow!

For Beatle fans, it's been an interesting few weeks: Within the past month, most of John Lennon's solo albums have been released, George Harrison's collaborations with Ravi Shankar have been repackaged, and--this week--Paul McCartney's Band On The Run is making the rounds once more!

Maybe just to put things in my own personal perspective, I've spent the last few weeks listening not only to the Lennon set but also the McCartney solo albums--from his very first solo album onward--and have attempted to hear all of them with the advantage of a 2010 perspective!

With no preconceptions about who was really the "cooler" Beatle--because, believe it or not, that's often been the means by which each artist's ultimate relevancy has been determined--I have to say it's been an enlightening few weeks!

Paul McCartney & Wings: Band On The Run (MPL/Concord)? With age comes wisdom, and so it is that in 2010, a listen to Paul McCartney's best-selling post-Beatles classic reveals that yes indeed--it is the best post-Beatles album ever released by a member of the Fab Four! Aside from the not-insignificant fact that it bore actual hit records such as the title track, "Jet," and radio hits "Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five" and "Bluebird," the album simply continues to sound fresh and would sound exactly the same to those who had no knowledge whatsoever that McCartney was once a member of the Beatles! Additionally, all those things that once seemed liabilities during the first few McCartney albums--most specifically Linda McCartney's backing vocals--now seem surprisingly accessible in the wake of the delightfully amateurish vocal hijinks that would follow via, say, the Marine Girls, the Slits, and those militant chicks from the Pacific Northwest! Plus, "Helen Wheels," the original version of which is included in the deluxe version of this set, may be the finest Moby Grape tribute ever recorded! Between this, Ram and McCartney II, I'm thinking Mr. McCartney still has much to be appreciated for! See if you don't agree!

Jason Aldean: My Kinda Party (Broken Bow)? Country star Jason Aldean continues to rise in popularity, not only because he's got his finger on the pulse of contemporary America, but when it comes to describing this country's soft white underbelly, he can't be beat! And so it is that My Kinda Party spells out precisely the goings-on that most of us have suspected, but have never been able to confirm, at the various Tupperware parties taking place in households well-to-do and otherwise in America's Deep South--where booze is cheap, thrills even cheaper, and a transparent orange sandwich-holder can arouse members of both sexes regardless of their age! I understand cider is often served!

N.E.R.D.: Nothing (Star Trak/Interscope)? It's said that N*E*R*D is an acronym for Nothing Ever Really Dies--but perhaps less well known is the fact that it also stands for Never Eat Red Donuts, Nubiles Entertaining Robotic Discourse, and, most significantly, Neurosis Enveloping Reticent Dentists! And so it is that the highly talented trio of Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo and Shae Haley have returned, paying tribute not only to ‘60s DC Comics star Sgt. Rock, but to Woody Woodpecker, the Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird" and--oh, let's just say Prince's "When Doves Cry"! In some ways strikingly similar to John Kay & Steppenwolf's underrated 1990 classic Rise & Shine, Nothing offers everything its very name implies times two!

The Sound Of Music: 45th Anniversary (Sony Legacy)? I will always be grateful to my parents for dragging me along to see original classics such as The Sound Of Music, My Fair Lady, Camelot and Funny Girl on Broadway, as they happened, when I was a mere squirt, and for playing those shows' original cast albums to the point of absurdity for years later, as I know every single word of every song performed in them and suspect I would probably end up singing them to myself in chronological order if I were ever lying comatose in a hospital bed and was struggling to maintain my sanity! Yeah, like that would ever happen! That said, I naturally was a snob when it came to seeing the actual movie versions of these productions, and thus feel no strong attachment to their respective film soundtracks--though I must say, 45 years later, adding a "bonus track" by a member of today's Glee cast certainly makes them infinitely more listenable and, I suspect, better pieces of art overall! If the hills have eyes, of course they're alive!

Brad Paisley: Hits Alive (Arista Nashville)? When it comes to Nashville superstars named Brad, you can't go wrong if you're thinking Paisley--and the so-called "triple threat" talent that BP clearly is can do no wrong here, in a fabulous greatest hits collection greatly aided by a second disc of stellar live performances! Additional bonus: they're all by him! Paisley's warmth, exuberance and outright accessibility will attract music fans of every stripe--after all, who wouldn't want to hear tracks named "Ticks" and "I'm Still A Guy"? Whatever you do, don't focus on the obvious anagram!

Good Charlotte: Cardiology (Capitol)? In this rough ‘n' tumble world, I think most of us don't spend enough time considering the plight of one-time popular "emo" pop-punk bands who are still out there trying to make a living, even though merely mentioning the name "Yellowcard" in today's hippest social gatherings is certain to raise titters among those inclined to chuckle at the word "titters"! And so it is that Good Charlotte, now 58 years old, hefty and suffering from chronic asthma, return with a new album detailing four unpleasant months recently spent in their local cardiology unit, where continual indignities involving both their hospital gowns and sigmoidoscopes have given them a perspective both unique and, it must be said, unenviable! Still, this baby rocks!

Frank Sinatra: Frank Sinatra: Concert Collection (Shout Factory DVD) ?One of the year's best video collections--and surprisingly massive in scope--this seven-disc DVD set showcases the legendary singer very much in his prime, including his first-ever 1965 TV special, his classic televised set with Ella Fitzgerald and Antonio Carlos Jobim, and a cast including Count Basie, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Tony Bennett, and even Princess Grace of Monaco! An ambitious box set, lengthy, historic and never less than enjoyable, it's a superb documentation of one of America's most foremost entertainment icons and a natural Christmas present for the elders or young hipsters in your extended family! They won't even notice you sneaking behind the bar while they're watching it!

Huey Lewis & The News: Soulsville (W.O.W.)? Records like this prove precisely how much MTV devalued music as music during its historic run in the ‘80s! Like, if you merely mention Huey Lewis & The News in a contemporary social situation--and I don't know about you, but I'm always finding myself in those sort of things--the natural reaction will be something between a guilty smirk and a condescending glare implying how in the world could you have ever taken them seriously? But this album--featuring the ‘80s rockin' dudes covering much of the Stax Records archive--is well-played, well-sung, sincere stuff that 30 years later beats the pants off this band's MTV contemporaries! Literally! So it's embarrassing to watch!

Black Dub: Black Dub (Jive)? Exceptionally performed music by superstar producer/guitarist Daniel Lanois, drummer Brian Blade, bassist Daryl Johnson and singer Trixie (daughter of Chris) Whitley, Black Dub is one of those quirky albums that a major label releases now and then that appears to exist purely because it made musical sense--rather than it seemed to bear one incredibly great single and nine other pieces of insubstantial crud! As such, let's all ignore it and finally teach those nasty record labels that all we want are moronic hit records we don't have to pay attention to! Don't they get it? Then we can share a donut!

Matt And Kim: Sidewalks (Fader) Much like Dick & Dee Dee, Friend & Lover, Ashford & Simpson, Peaches & Herb, Mickey & Sylvia, Paul & Paula, Marvin & Tammi, the Captain & Tennile, Nancy & Lee, and Ike & Tina, Matt and Kim are air breathers!

As we near the end of the year, the big guns are releasing all their wares!

In the old days, that might mean that the world's biggest recording artists are putting out their new albums just in time for holiday shoppers!

These days, though, it means that the world's biggest labels are throwing out absolutely anything with a major artist's name on it--purely so that they can afford to fill their yachts with gas while we the people lay rolling on the floor, broke, hungry, and wondering where our next meal is coming from!

Still, that 43-CD Miles Davis box set does look tempting, and I'm sure my son wouldn't notice if I sold his first-ever soccer trophy in order to buy it! Besides, food is great and all, but how long do you think all these great "deluxe versions" of?classic albums will be available?

Besides, anyone can have a son!

Taylor Swift: Speak Now (Big Machine)? I don't think it's an understatement to say the entire world is waiting for the brand new Taylor Swift album! Especially when it comes to the planet Glugg--whose residents are not only charismatic as heck but frankly represent Swift's biggest market! Swift's abilities as a songwriter, finely honed now after five full decades of living, feeling, and hurting, have never been so sharp--nor her words, her lost loves, her everyday dramas, so acutely depicted as they are here, on what many will call the album of a lifetime! Additionally, because she's blonde and considered attractive by some, her works merit all the more attention! Word is there are songs on this thing!

Bryan Ferry: Olympia (Astralwerks)? As per the recent agreement that all albums released this week will feature a comely blonde bearing a come-hither look on their cover--heck, why not?--this new album by Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry follows all expectations and then some! Superbly played music, well-penned songs, still reeking of the complete coolness that has followed the singer from Day 1, Olympia is a well-sculpted, highly enjoyable piece of art that puts most of the rest of this week's releases to shame! Still, whether the world was waiting for Ferry to cover such pivotal works as Traffic's "No Face, No Name, No Number" or Tim Buckley's "Song To the Siren"--songs that were literally perfect from the get-go and needed no covering--is debatable! But so's global warming,?and who cares?

Buddy Guy: Living Proof (Silvertone/Jive)? It's hard to argue with success, and Buddy Guy's remarkable career as a blues guitarist continues to grow as he's reached his 74th year! A strong album, bolstered with guest appearances by B.B. King and Carlos Santana, Living Proof is highly listenable through and through and might well be discussed purely for its cover graphic alone, which resembles that little piece of paper wrapped around a liquor bottle that sometimes you pull off because you're completely bored and, well, you just want to see if you can do it, according to reputable sources! Additional bonus: he's quite good!

Jeff Beck: Live And Exclusive From the Grammy Museum (Atco)? Speaking of incredibly cool guitarists, let's not forget Jeff Beck, whose latest album--a live set recorded in LA earlier this year--is typically impeccable, groovy, and better than any record produced by most other living humans! Featuring covers of such classics as "A Day In The Life," "Over The Rainbow" and "People Get Ready," the album is a fine showcasing of Beck's unnatural guitar skills and completely worth your purchasing! Perhaps you should buy it, look at the remainder of your music collection, and consider whether anything else you own has any value whatsoever! Then--I don't know--go see if you really can freeze vodka!

The Octopus Project: Hexadecagon (Peek-A-Boo) There's nothing like a great indie band who probably spent a lot of time listening to records by Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and Philip Glass and are completely into being repetitive just because it's possible! This latest set by the much acclaimed Octopus Project--a favorite among today's sophisticated oceanographers and marine biologists--is fine listening throughout, even when deliberately played in mono because that button is just sitting there on your receiver and you never really get to use it anymore! Incidentally, a hexadecagon is a 16-sided object! So it's twice as good as Chicago At Carnegie Hall!

Miles Davis: The Genius Of Miles Davis (Columbia/Legacy)? Hypothetically speaking, there are people who like Miles Davis and there are people who love Miles Davis! And in that second group, there are people who really, really love Miles Davis! If that describes you to a T, then I know what you want for Christmas! How about this extremely limited edition, 43-CD set consisting of the man's classic recordings for Columbia, packaged in a full-size trumpet case, including a replica of his original trumpet mouthpiece, a lithograph, a t-shirt, and--I don't know--bonus oxygen! Frankly, if I were a well-to-do music fan with limited options in terms of finding new music I liked and lots of money to spend, I'd probably buy this and never even open it! Just owning it would be enough! I'd probably also read the Wall Street Journal and sweat a lot!

John Cale & Band: Live At Rockpalast (M.I.G. Music)? John Cale made the LA papers recently for his live performance of his classic Paris 1919 album, so maybe the time is right to re-evaluate all the great work the former Velvet Underground dude has created in the last 40 years or so! Interested? If so, this 2-CD set, taken from a couple of live performances on German TV, is as good a place to start as any, as it features him performing much of his best material is an agreeable and highly compelling manner! Plus, it's good! Featuring tracks going as far back as his classic Vintage Violence set, the collection is a lengthy, comprehensive set sure to inspire humans the world over! The next necessary step? His overseeing the 5.1 surround version of Nico's Marble Index! Then perhaps a collaboration with Bret Michaels!

James Taylor: James Taylor (Apple)? You wouldn't know it now, but James Taylor was a pretty cutting-edge artist back in his early days, and this--his first album, originally issued on Apple in 1968 and now newly remastered and offered up again--may be his best album ever. Finely played, exquisitely arranged, and filled with a surprising number of songs that about as emotionally dark as you'd ever want, the album was the prelude to a career that would soon be massive but rarely again as focused on such harrowing subject matter. Very highly recommended. Plus: Dig the enthusiastic cover picture!

Ray Charles: Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters (Concord) He would've been 80 years old this year, but you can bet Ray Charles would have lost little of his magic. This welcome package, filled with newly discovered recordings--including a duet with Johnny Cash, no less--is?an excellent?set of 10 tracks extending back through the ‘70s, filled with the warmth and grit that made the singer such a legendary figure. There may be raw demos here, but in the case of Ray Charles, nothing ever really needed sweetening up. Check it out!

Michael Buble: Crazy Love Hollywood Edition (Reprise) Everyone's favorite contemporary crooner just took a trip to Hollywood Boulevard, bought some fine new shoes, and checked out the cement handprints at Grauman's Chinese Theatre! Some call it post-rock, but I call it alternative!
